Vision for the Environment Award
Mayor Richard M. Daley
Mayor Richard M. Daley has earned a national reputation for innovative, community
based programs that address environmental concerns, land use, and other conservation
challenges facing American cities. His focus on quality of life has sparked greater
emphasis on citywide recycling, removal of graffiti, and the creation of more green space.
Since he became Mayor, the city has planted over 500,000 trees, created 100 school
campus parks, built 70 miles of landscaped street medians, and spurred the construction
of rooftop gardens on major buildings, including City Hall. During his long and
successful tenure, Richard M. Daley has led the: effort to further establish Chicago as a
"green city" and has been an effective advocate of preserving our community for generations to follow.

Allied Waste
As Chicagoland's largest waste operator, Allied Waste has been offering residential,
industrial, and commercial customers, complete solutions for solid waste collection,
recycling, and disposal throughout the region for more than half a century. Serving over
70 communities in northeast Illinois, Allied provides everything from residential
collection, construction and demolition removal, municipal recycling programs, and
state-of-the-art landfill operations. Over the years, Allied has demonstrated a deep
commitment to making a difference in the environment through a variety of initiatives
and has firmly established itself as a leading environmental excellence advocate.
Altria Group, Inc.
The Altria Group and its sister company Phillip Morris International, are committed to
reducing the environmental impact of their activities as they promote the natural
resources upon which they depend. They are working to benchmark their environmental
performance, set priorities for the future, and identify opportunities to work with effective
environmental leaders. In 2002, PM USA provided funding to Keep America
Beautiful for research and development of a multi-year Cigarette Litter Prevention
Program. Through the recognition of this significant contribution to litter in the
environment, Altria and PM USA have worked to enforce existing litter laws and create a
program that has been implemented in more than 160 communities across the country.
Keep Illinois Beautiful Environmental Vision Award
Douglas P. Scott, Director, Illinois EPA
Director Scott began his tenure at the Illinois EPA in 2005, after previously
serving as Mayor of Rockford, as a Srate Representative, and as Rockford City
Attorney. He was instrumental in establishing curbside recycling and a permanent
household hazardous waste collection facility in Rockford. As Director of the
Illinois EPA, he has worked with the Governor to reduce air emissions from power
plants, implement new programs to clean up open dumping sites, and expand
protection for water resources.
Education Vision Award
Virginia Hohl - Master Teacher, Keep Chicago Beautiful
Virginia was the first teacher recruited to participate in the "Waste in Place"
curriculum pilot program in 1989 and has been involved with KCB ever since.
For 18 years, she has served as a Master Teacher for the Environmental Education
Workshops at the Chicago Center for Green Technology. Through her efforts,
Virginia has helped thousands of young people understand the importance of
preserving our surroundings.
Education Vision Award
Pat Brey - Master Teacher, Keep Chicago Beautiful
Pat has been an active part of KCB since 1991. Serving as the Director of
Education, she helped expand vital environmental education programs to all of
Chicago's 50 wards. From her early days with KCB, Pat has coordinated and has
served as a Master Teacher for the Environmental Education Workshops at the
Chicago Center for Green Technology, helping teachers integrate Earth friendly
activities and lesson plans into their own classrooms.
